The “Recipe”

The traditional “treatment” for close canine encounters with
those champions of odiferous offensiveness, skunks, is to douse the dog
in tomato juice. Let the juice dry in the hair; then wash it out
the next day. This is only moderately effective and where are you
going to stash a dog or two or three while the red goo drips and dries?
It’s a problem.
The following is a quicker solution to the problem. Mix together:
- One quarter cup of baking soda
- One ounce of dish washing liquid detergent (not electric dish
washer type)
- One quart of Hydrogen Peroxide.
Stuff cotton balls in the dogs ears. Put the dog in the tub and
sponge this solution all over the dog taking care to avoid nose, eyes
and inner ears. Stay with the dog in the tub for about ten
minutes. Try to keep him from shaking all over the place (you
hope). Then rinse well and dry as usual.
WARNING: This will probably remove the color from towels, wall paper,
rugs etc. It doesn’t seem to bleach colored dog hair, but white
dogs will be really white when you are finished. I usually try to
do this special bath outside in a plastic wading pool if weather
permits.
For a time, the dogs will probably still smell “skunky” when they
get wet. You should at least be able to stand having them
around. Poor babies, they will need to know that you really do
love them in spite of their latest adventure.
Thanks to my friend, Sarah Overstreet, for passing the recipe along
to me.
Good Luck!
